Why RPM Matters Now!

Why RPM Matters Now!

Connected health, m-health (mobile health), telehealth, and patient engagement are all adjectives that abound in our lives today with the recent care structures and pandemic.   However, let’s take a step back to 2010.  In 2007 it had been demonstrated and documented that a $1 investment in health and wellness (prevention) programs return $3 to $6.50 in reduced health care costs per a Wellness Council of America Special Report!  Too bad we didn’t take advantage of this in 2007!  Additionally, in 2010 a premise that “we manage what we measure”, started and centered on personal health monitoring as services designed to engage individual patients in managing their health. This was to be accomplished by:
  • delivering advanced stage zero[i] mobile health monitor technologies to measure
and communicate individual health status indicators
  • delivering flexible, customized solutions that are specific to individual changing
health needs, interests, physical and financial capabilities
  • aggregating monitor data with data from other electronic health information resources, such as personal health records, to facilitate an electronic assessment of an individual’s health status
  • applying automated data analytics, standards, targeted performance objectives, predictive modeling and rules logic to draw conclusions about the subscriber’s health status and to identify potential resources
  • the timely, automated notification of subscribers and their health management text and e-mail messages as to changes in health status that require attention (support or intervention) to proactively engage and motivate individuals in achieving their personal health status targets

So why didn’t this market explode!  The trouble was the focus on the technology and not the clinical efficacy and outcomes.   In addition, how were the providers going to get reimbursed for this type of care engagement?  No clear design or roadmaps were deployed, but technology in many formats sure hit the streets.

RPM, remote patient monitoring, is meant to be a key solution in care transition, care coordination, and key chronic or key discovery tools to address or diagnose a potential issue.  Technology is involved in this process without a doubt.  However, the biggest evidence of success is the telemetry data impacting care outcomes.  This is achieved by continuously or scheduled monitoring of a patient with a specific chronic diagnosis or a suspected diagnosis and providing that data to a physician to review over a prescribed time or when an event occurs that sends an alert.  This data can be provided for intervention or treatment purposes to the provider, spouse, care manager, or whoever is in the contact list.  Additionally, the data can be assessed by business intelligence and artificial intelligence solutions that can provide prescriptive future needs.  By being able to extend care outside of the normal care models patients get treatment, maintain engagement in their health, and with quality medical intervention get a positive outcome.   Couple RPM with Telehealth in today’s Covid-19 environment, you get care that now goes beyond just brick and mortar, you get true global and national care models that engage providers and patients as never before.

The bonus is that RPM is vital for our future, and insurers across the board are now reimbursing our key care givers for this model!  A win for all!
